How to get meals

Mom's Meals provides meals for many Medicaid programs across the country. Program requirements vary from state to state. Mom's Meals is not able to determine your eligibility for you — you must contact the provider of your Medicaid coverage to see what is available to you. You could also contact the Area Agency on Aging in your area to see what programs are available to you. If one of those organizations determines that you are eligible for meals, ask them to submit an authorization on your behalf to us so that we may start meals for you.

Medicare itself does not cover meals. However, there are some Medicare Advantage (MA) plans that offer home-delivered meal benefits. For example, you may be able to get meals through a benefit when being discharged from the hospital or a skilled nursing facility, or if you are working with your health plan to better manage a chronic health condition. Some MA plans also offer a way for you to purchase meals through pre-paid benefit cards. Mom's Meals is not able to determine your eligibility for you — you must contact your health insurance plan to find out what kind of coverage is available to you. This information can usually be found by reviewing your Summary of Benefits and Coverage document from your plan or by calling the customer services phone number on the back of your insurance card. If your health insurance plan determines that you are eligible for meals, ask them to submit an authorization on your behalf to us so that we may start meals for you.

Meal preparation

No preparation required! Simply follow the suggested heating instructions on the label of each entree, warm in the microwave and you have a delicious and nutritious meal to enjoy!

We do not add hormones, nitrates, or preservatives to our meals. However, there may be nitrates or preservatives present in some ingredients that we purchase that extend their shelf life. Whatever is listed in the product specification for an ingredient we use is listed on our ingredient label.

We offer gluten-free, dairy-free, and tree nut free options. We provide a list of all ingredients on each meal details page. Use filters to select your preferences. While we take every precaution to avoid cross-contamination, our meals are produced in USDA-inspected kitchens where allergens might be present. At this time, we do not offer a dedicated vegan menu.

Ingredients appear on the packaging of each meal. However, you can also find the list of ingredients and nutritional information for each meal by viewing meals here.

Just follow the simple heating steps provided on each meal package. Meals are best when heated right from the fridge.

Meal storage

Our meals are designed and packaged to last in the refrigerator for 14 days from delivery. Although meals can be kept in the freezer, we suggest storing them in the refrigerator to ensure the best quality. If you are unable to consume the meals within the 14 days you may store them in the freezer; however, be sure to thaw overnight in the refrigerator prior to heating.

We use proprietary packaging that eliminates gases. Our breakthrough packaging prevents spoilage during transport from our USDA-inspected kitchen to homes. And, meals will last in the refrigerator for 14 days from delivery when placed in a refrigerator that is maintained at a temperature of 40 degrees or below.

Contracting with Mom's Meals

Pricing for our program is agreed upon between Mom's Meals and the individual partners. Costs are based on several variables.

Five things make Mom’s Meals different:

  1. Refrigerated Meals — High-quality, refrigerated meals from our USDA inspected kitchens will keep in the refrigerator (40°F) for 14 days from delivery.
  2. Individual Choice — Clients get to choose every meal for every delivery from a broad range of options to satisfy unique taste preferences and needs.
  3. Medically Tailored Menus — Crafted by chefs and registered dietitians, our meals taste great and nutritionally support most common chronic conditions.
  4. Delivery to Any Address — Through a combination of our local drivers and third party shippers, we can reach home nationwide.
  5. Customer Care — Compassionate service, built from our own personal roots, caring for our clients as we do our own family and loved ones.

Setting up a client

We need a referral along with information about the member or patient, including identification and address for delivery, meal start date and duration, the quantity of meals per day, case manager or other referring provider information, and any other notes regarding the unique food preferences or delivery information to best serve each individual.

If we receive paperwork by 5 PM Thursday, the client will receive their first delivery the following week. Clients whose paperwork arrives after 5 PM on Thursday will be delivered the week after next.

The number of meals and frequency of delivery varies based on plan design. However, in general, clients who are authorized for:

  • 3 meals or less per week will receive a monthly delivery
  • 4-7 meals per week will be delivered every other week
  • 8+ meals per week will be delivered on a weekly basis

We deliver 14 meals every other week for several reasons:

  • Minimize the amount of packaging
  • Average refrigerators can easily store 14 meals (meals should be refrigerated)
  • Meals will last in the refrigerator for 14 days from delivery

Resuming a client is similar to setting up a new client so we need notice by 5pm on Thursday in order to be delivered the following week. If an expedited start is requested, we need to check with our logistics team to determine if we are able to accommodate the request.

Cancellation cutoffs vary from client to client based on their delivery schedule and method. Typically, if we receive the request to cancel meals for the next delivery, we would need it by 5 PM on Thursday.
