Wednesday, September 28, 2022, marks a historic day in our nation’s ongoing quest to address hunger and nutrition. On that day, the Biden-Harris Administration hosts the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, with a goal of ending hunger and increasing healthy eating and physical activity by 2030, so that fewer Americans experience diet-related diseases like diabetes, obesity and hypertension.
It’s been 50 years since the last such conference, which helped spur the creation of programs such as school lunches, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and changes to how we label foods. This year’s event aims to rally public and private sector organizations to accelerate progress and drive transformative change in the U.S. to end hunger, improve nutrition and physical activity, and close the disparities surrounding them.
The conference’s goal is closely aligned with the Mom’s Meals® mission of improving life through better nutrition at home for all Americans. It also coincides with Mom’s Meals annual Hunger Challenge, which launches this month.
Mom’s Meals is dedicated to helping the administration meet this crucial goal and has submitted a commitment to support the pillars of the conference by collaborating with state, private entities, health care providers, community-based organizations (CBOs), government payors, health plans, and all local resources available to develop state-sponsored hunger coalitions.
We are also working on a coordinated “day of service” for employees in their local communities, set to launch later this fall. The program encourages volunteerism to support food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, houses of worship, and other organizations supporting those facing food insecurity.
Mom’s Meals will also have a presence and a voice at this week’s event. Senior Vice President and Chief Nutrition Officer Catherine Macpherson has been invited to and will attend the day-long event in Washington. Look here in the coming days for a summary of her observations and takeaways.
